Freddie Matthews
"Semi Country Bluesman"

What address was it on Music Square in Nashville? He doesn’t remember, but the man listened to the demo tape leaning way back in his swivel chair. When the song ended, he reached forward and turned off the cassette, kicked back again, scratched his head and paused.

“What I’m hearing here is sort of semi-country blues,” he pronounced. He went on to say he didn’t know who to send him to but, “I like it. Good luck.”

After knocking on a few other doors and getting heard by a few other Nashville Cats, Blake Mevis thought the music and the voice were worth playing for MCA’s top dog at the time Jimmy Bowen. Mevis was busy with this other Texas talent producing a song called “Unwound,” George Strait’s first hit.

Freddie went on to New York… Tommy West (Jim Croce’s producer) said to catch him at his Nashville office after he finished what he was doing then. Dave Carpin at RCA liked what he heard and steered him to friends in Washington, D.C. Bill Danoff (“Almost Heaven, West Virginia” and “Afternoon Delight”) took a couple of his tunes into their publishing company and plugged them for awhile.

This Sunflower County, Mississippi boy who grew up on the banks of the Quiver River in the heart of the famous Mississippi Delta so well known for being the home of the blues has been said to play “blue eyed soul with a country flavor.” That is from Greg Phillipi, an ABC TV Music Director who picked up one of Freddie’s tapes at the 1991 Los Angeles /Austin Songwriters Group Expo. Meanwhile Freddie went back to Houston and continued playing the prime rib and ice house circuit while waiting for that call to come. Life intervened and now, after many forks in many roads, Freddie settled in San Angelo, Texas where he played his music at many different venues.

Now, he’s on the proverbial road again gone back to the Mississippi Delta where he was born and raised… another chapter beginning.
