Freddie’s son Jonathon (left) came in from San Angelo, Texas for Thanksgiving. Freddie, Country Jack Harper and Freddie’s son Jeremiah threw a jam at Darry’s Eat Place on Tuesday, November 20, 2007. Lots of folks showed up and many musicians sat in. A good time was had by all. Freddie still talks about the Darry’s steak (filet) he wolfed down that night…”Best steak I’ve had since I left Texas!”
Freddie has been working a lot with Country Jack Harper. They’ve become pretty well known on the “Hush Puppies, Greens and Butterbeans Circuit” in the Central Mississippi and Arkansas Delta.
Duff Dorrough seems to be staying busy these days. Check this out:
There’s a live music scene growing in San Angelo, Texas. Check out The Chicken Farm Art Center where Roger Allen et al promote live music along with their art colony which is still one of the best kept secrets in West Texas. Check out Roger’s unique pottery…especially his Starkeeper series.
Also, Freddie's friends in San Angelo Blues Society have scored a real zinger…They have booked Pinetop Perkins for a concert at the famous old Cactus Hotel in cooperation with the San Angelo Cultural Affairs Council (SACAC) for February 22, 2008. Here is an excerpt from the San Angelo Blues Society last newsletter:
“... a few weeks ago I was in Austin on 6th St., at Nuno's Bar. I saw Mr. Pinetop Perkins walk in and play the piano. Mr. Perkins was born in 1913 so he 95 years old. He was wonderful and amazing to listen to. I asked Mr. Perkins if he would come to San Angelo to play for us. He said he would if he got paid, then he grinned and chuckled…I Contacted his booking agency when I got home…. Mr. Perkins is a boogie woogie bluesman from Mississipi who migrated to Chicago and then back to Austin. He is a great human interest story…”

Freddie’s brother Tom’s step daughter is Nuno’s (Nuno’s Bar above) wife, Angie. Nuno and Angie have been involved with Pinetop Perkins for some time now, recently attending a Blues Festival in Helena, Arkansas with him. Angie is also pictured with Pinetop in the photo section of a recent issue of Delta Magazine. Pinetop is “up for a Grammy Award” this year according to Angie. There is a DVD documentary about his life titled Born in the Honey…very well done and interesting to watch.
Jerry Cochran of Houston, Texas, one of Freddie's old Buddies, has linked to this website. There’s lots of interesting stuff there. Check it out. There’s a photo on the site of Jerry with Elvis in Memphis. Read his bio on his website…he’s done a lot.
John Defoore, another Texas connection of Freddie’s (He’s the one who was coming over to join with Freddie and go play Morgan Freeman’s Blues Club Open Mic about a year ago…life intervened, but there’s always the future.) has a new website. He has Defoore Music Institute in Minneola, Texas and you will be amazed at the number of famous students he has taught in the last few years. Check out his web site. There’s a clip of John and Freddie (Freddie and Me) on his music page. Freddie stopped by his place on the way from San Angelo last year and they recorded a little “noodling” they did. Freddie played John’s baritone guitar while John picked on his standard acoustic. It’s an interesting little tidbit. Check out John’s originals.
John Campbell is a Memphis man these days. He’s an old Cleveland, MS boy that Freddie went to junior college with and they wound up hitchhiking to New Orleans for a summer of growing up “back in the days.” Now this guy can not only sing and play guitar, he paints fine arts. Go to his website to see his work.
